How to Make Travel Less Stressful for Your Pet

How to Make Travel Less Stressful for Your Pet

Traveling with your pet is supposed to be fun. But for pets who don’t travel often or balk at strange surroundings, it can turn into an experience you don’t want to repeat. The journey itself can be stressful for pets: new environments, unfamiliar sounds, and changes in routine can put them on edge.

Now for the good news: There are a few simple things you can do as a pet parent to ease their minds and help them enjoy the adventure.

Here are some tried-and-true tips to help you and your pet have smooth, stress-free travels together.

1. Get Them Used to the Carrier or Stroller

Your pet will be spending a lot of time in their “portable home,” so make sure they like it. If they’re not used to a carrier, put it down on the floor with the door open several days before your trip. This lets them check it out at their convenience, and maybe even try it themselves.

If you have a PetLuv soft-sided pet carrier, you might already be using it as their pet hotel at home. This will help your future travels because it becomes a space they’re already comfortable in and can feel at home in even when you’re on the go.

2. Bring Along Some Comfort Items

Just like us, pets feel more at ease with the comforts of home. Bring along a few of their favorite items — like a familiar blanket, a couple of toys, and some treats they love. There’s nothing like a little bribe when your pet is feeling anxious to redirect their attention and keep them calm.

PetLuv’s plush pillows are a main part of the carrier and will give your pet something to snuggle while in transport. If you’ve been using the pillow at home, it will already smell like their surroundings and will help to put them at ease.

3. Take Breaks for Exercise

No one likes feeling cramped, so make sure you take breaks when possible. This is a great time to feed your pet and rehydrate them while they stretch their legs. It’s good for you too, human!

4. Create a Calm Environment During Transport

Any type of jostling or movement can send your pet’s stress level soaring. Weird sounds or smells can also remind them they’re no longer in Kansas.

You can’t control everything around you, so focus on the things you can control. For example, use a carrier that’s easy to seatbelt into a taxi or rental car. This will help avoid potential spills, movements, or safety issues.
